Summary:

Shrek has now all he has ever desired to have. He is king of the fairytale kingdom of Far Far Away, he has many friends, a loving family and is loved by all his subjects. But when you have all you desire, you think there is more, and Shrek begins to feel bored of his life. But all of this changes when he comes across the devious Rumpelstilskin who uses his wish to change everything.
Now, in the latest animation from DreamWorks Animation, you will see what happens when Shrek’s desires to have a different life than what he has now. He feels like a real ogre, but in a new and different land of Far Far Away, a land where king is Ramplestilskin, where ogres are hunted and where Shrek has never met Princess Fiona.
Now you can enjoy the animation even more with the 3D art books. You can find out how Donkey, Fiona, Shrek and Farqhuad came to be and how their adventures were created in Shrek Forever After as well as the previous books. You will even see how the wonderful fairy land of Far Far Away came to be.

The book

You will see that the chromatics of the book are mainly those of the contract between Shrek and Rumpelstilskin: many tones of dark green, grey and gold. These colors are especially used in the background paintings to symbolize the change from the Far Far Away ruled by Shrek to the Fairyland ruled by Rumpel. Although a wonderful idea, I personally miss the lush emerald green of the forest from the first movies.

The book presents many designs used in props like the sign from the Candy Apple store, the design of the witch’s carriage, the toys from Shrek’s kids and many others. You will also find the character designs, but the main characters, Fiona, Shrek and Rumple, have the center spot light. The other characters are being given a smaller number of pages. What you will find enjoyable in this book is that there are a few pages about ogres animations besides Shrek.

A minus of the book, from my point of view, was that they did not use the discarded concepts for Warrior Princess Fiona. I think they are more appealing from the visual point of view.

You can find the book on Amazon, for about $20, a pretty good deal, if I may say. It’s a book you should have if you enjoyed the series, but if you are on a budget, at least buy the first book. I personally think that the art was better in that one.
